Still, first play only took about 40 minutes, so this is going to be a great filler or multi-play in an evening type game. It was pretty easy to pick up but we did have slight AP when putting together each painting so that we maximized our scoring opportunities.

Not only do you have to draft the correct painting elements with the swatches that you need, but you also have to layer them in such a way that you aren't covering up a scoring opportunity.Īt the end of the game, you get points for each color ribbon based on the number you "win". The challenge is that more than one of your three cards for the painting may have that swatch and one will cover another. For example, if you have all five swatches, you may get a red ribbon while, if you have two of the triangle symbols showing, you may get a blue. There are four scoring goals each game that refer to how these swatches show after the three cards are combined. While, in reality, the actual painting is all esthetics and doesn't count, itself, in scoring, it all comes down to the five color "swatches" at the bottom of the card. You are drafting these clear cards with elements of a painting on them, paying a premium if you want newly revealed ones (I understand it is like Century Spice Road although I haven't played that yet) and, eventually, assembling three of the cards into a finished "painting". What a clever game! There really aren't a lot of rules.

I splurged and actually paid full price at our FLGS to pick up Canvas as there have been so many good comments and I didn't even think it had hit retail until I saw it there. I went full military and won partway into age 3, but with way less points than her

The second game was much shorter and less exciting - she got starved for resources and I had them all, so she was having difficulty getting useful cards. It was an exciting round and I barely got the win! She totally had me beaten on the points front, having 49 to my 46, if I hadn’t clinched the science route. I was getting thoroughly beaten, but on the last two cards of the game I had gotten it set up so that whichever she chose gave me a science match with the other and allowed me to grab the Law discovery winning the game on the last card. She was going very point heavy and we balanced out military. I got the scientific discovery token for economy and started taking all of Ashlyn’s money as well. The first game I was hurting for resources, but managed to get a huge amount of coinage and grabbed 5 science symbols.
